But, each alloy has a number, which is specified when it is important to use only that alloy. The principal benefits obtained by alloying aluminum are increased strength, better machinability and excellent workability and weldability. Different alloys have these characteristics in varying combinations and degrees. But most aluminum alloys still retain pure aluminum long-lasting attractive appearance and remarkably light weight. In discussing what we need to know about aluminum alloys, we will start by considering which elements are most frequently added to aluminum and what effects they have in terms of creating several &#8220;new aluminums,&#8221; each having its own characteristics. Wrought Aluminum Alloys Silicon, iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, nickel and zinc are the principal elements used for wrought aluminum alloys. None of these is used in a large percentage; a few other elements sometimes are added also, but in smaller amounts. For convenience, two similar &#8220;series numbering&#8221; systems (one for wrought and one for casting alloys) have been established to identify the principal elements in a given alloy. The wrought series and their major alloying elements are listed in Table I. A system of four-digit numerical designation is used to identify wrought aluminum and wrought aluminum alloys. The first digit indicates the alloy group as shown in Table I. The 1xxx series is used for minimum aluminum purities of 99.00 percent and greater. The 2xxx through 8xxx series group aluminum alloys by major alloying elements. The last two digits identify the aluminum alloy or indicate the aluminum purity. The second digit indicates modifications of the original alloy or impurity limits. Experimental Alloys <br /> Experimental alloys also are designated using this system. They are given an &#8220;x&#8221; prefix. When the alloy is no longer experimental, the prefix is ??dropped. During development and before being designated as experimental, new alloys are identified by serial numbers, which are assigned by their originators . Primary Effects of Alloying Elements Pure aluminum is not heat-treatable but it work hardens or gains strength when bent, hammered or otherwise worked. The addition of alloying elements does not eliminate this characteristic and all aluminum alloys also gain strength when cold worked. However , adding elements to aluminum affects the metal in many other respects. Chief among them is that some alloys are heat treatable. The principal effects of alloying elements for each group of wrought aluminum alloys are as follows. 1000 Series <br /> <br / > Aluminum of 99 percent or higher purity has many applications, especially in the electrical and chemical fields. These alloys are characterized by excellent corrosion resistance, high thermal and electrical conductivity, low mechanical properties and excellent workability. These alloys require solution heat-treatment to obtain optimum properties. In the heat-treated condition , mechanical properties are similar to, and sometimes exceed, those of mild steel. In some instances, artificial aging is used to further increase mechanical properties. This treatment increases yield strength, with attendant loss in elongation. Its effect on tensile (ultimate) strength is not as great. Alloys in the 2000 series do not have as good corrosion resistance as most other aluminum alloys. Under certain conditions they may be subject to intergranular corrosion. Therefore, these alloys in the form of sheet often are clad with an alloy that provides galvanic protection to the core material and thus greatly increases resistance to corrosion. Alloy 2024 perhaps is the best known and most widely used aircraft alloy. 3000 Series <br /> Manganese is the major alloying element of alloys in this group , which are generally non-heat-treatable. Because only a limited percentage of manganese (up to about 1.5 percent) can be effectively added to aluminum, it is used as a major element only in a few instances.
